When in 1827 at St Nicholas, Deptford John Peerless, a widower, married Frances Oak, a widow, both of that parish, one of the witnesses was John's brother Joseph, who had also witnessed the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth at the same church one month before. In 1841 Census John was an agricultural labourer living with Frances and their son John at Withyham, in 1851 Census a road labourer living with Frances at Crowborough Lane, Withyham; he was not with her in the 1861 Census.

Will, when described as a road surveyor & contractor, dated 28.5.1869, proved at London 10.5.1870; probate to Thomas Fitness, farmer, & Henry Whitley of Tunbridge wells, solicitor's clerk; beneficiaries included his widow Charlotte, sons William, James & Henry and daughters Harriett Huntley, widow, Jane Saltmarsh & Ellen Russell.
